Cruise Ships provide unique and varied opportunities to many musicians. On some of the larger vessels up to 40 musicians are required at any one time in order
to provide dance music, easy listening music and 'back' the Production Shows and Cabaret performances.
The main musical group onboard any ship is the SHOWBAND. Depending on the size of the vessel in Question the SHOWBAND ranges from 4 -12 musicians, Who under the supervision of a Musical Director or
Bandleader, provide not only the 'backing' for major shows, but also music for Dance sets, Cocktail sets, Embarkation sets, Talent shows etc.
A typical contract dictates the maximum number of hours a musician may be called upon to play on a weekly basis, and this is usually around 35 hours per week (including rehearsal).
A musician contracted to work in the main SHOWBAND usually works every day of the week - typically (but not restricted to) the evening.
Instrumentation for the main SHOWBAND usually consists of Piano, Bass, Drums, Trumpet, Saxophone (Alto &/or Tenor), Trombone and sometimes Guitar.
